Aviation Road, Laverton

On behalf of the Victorian Government, the Level Crossing Removal Project is overseeing the removal of 75 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2025.
Construction is now underway to remove the level crossing at Aviation Road in Laverton.
The crossing will be removed by moving Maher Road onto a new bridge over the railway lines.
A bridge over the Werribee line was found to be the best design for this site following community consultation, planning and engineering advice.
As part of the first stage, we’ll install a new walking path and a cycling path along Maher Road, make improvements to the station entrance area, and plant new trees and shrubs.
When the station access pedestrian underpass is constructed in the second stage, we will also develop and landscape the new station forecourt area. This will include seating and bicycle hoops.
We also heard that the community would like additional car parking, a shared use path on Railway Avenue and secure bicycle storage. While these items are not currently within the project scope, we are working closely with other transport agencies on future plans for the station precinct.
The level crossing will be removed by early 2020 in the first stage.
Underpass works
The important pedestrian underpass to connect commuters to the nearby Aircraft Station will be completed in the second stage, which will align with level crossing removal works at Werribee and Cherry streets in Werribee. This will reduce the number of rail shutdowns needed on the Werribee line.
The staged approach will allow for trains to continue to run as the Aviation Road bridge takes shape, with temporary rail shutdowns primarily limited to weeknight and weekend closures.
This means no extended periods of buses replacing trains along sections of the Werribee line during the first stage of works, while also ensuring that no lengthy closures of Aviation Road are needed.
The pedestrian crossing will be upgraded in the first stage to improve access and safety until the new underpass is built.
