Cardinia Road, Pakenham

The Cardinia Road, Pakenham level crossing will be removed by building a road bridge. It is one of 17 level crossings to go on the Pakenham line.

A road bridge will create opportunities for local connections, landscape design and will minimise disruption to road and train users during construction.

Major works will begin later in 2019, with the boom gates gone by 2021.

The boom gates at Cardinia Road are down for up to a third of the morning peak and by 2026, more than 24,000 cars will travel through the crossing every day.

Removing this level crossing will improve traffic flow, provide the opportunity for more train services in the future and improve safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

  • I live close to this railway crossing. I am concerned about how you are going to manage the level of noise coming out of this building project. As well as the changes that is anticipated to happen to the landscape around the area, the connections and side-roads that will be created accordingly.

Michael Khalil asked 24 days ago

    Hi Michael,

    Thanks for your question.

With any major construction project, noise is unavoidable. However, we take every measure to reduce noise and vibration and actively monitor levels to make sure they are within the Environment Protection Authority (EPA) noise control guidelines.

For more information on how we reduce noise during construction, you can read our Construction Impacts Fact Sheet here- https://levelcrossings.vic.gov.au/media/publications/cardinia-road-pakenham-construction-impacts-fact-sheet

  • I am also interested in the McGregor Road crossing - has a decision been made about that dreadful rail crossing. Congestion and wait periods just getting worse. Road bridge there seems ideal.
