Clyde Road, Berwick

We’re removing the dangerous and congested level crossing at Clyde Road in Berwick, by building a road underpass beneath the rail line.

Site investigations and engineering assessments found that a road underpass is the best solution for removing the level crossing, with other designs taking up to a year longer to build.

This design will improve local connections for emergency services travelling to the nearby medical precinct, slash travel times for thousands of people going to local schools and tertiary institutes, and ease congestion for the 22,000 vehicles that travel through the level crossing every day.

Works will start in 2020 and the level crossing will be gone in 2022.

As part of planning works, we are looking at opportunities to enhance urban design, create new pedestrian and cycling connections and reduce disruption to road and rail users during our works.

We’ll work with the community to help refine the design details and help shape the look and feel of the Clyde Road Level Crossing Removal Project.

  • Does this mean Berwick station will be closed during construction? If I remember correctly, there was minimal if any disruptions when the level crossing was removed from Springvale. What’s this going to mean for commuters who use this station during the construction period?

    Delayed asked 3 months ago

    Hi there,

    Thanks for your question.

Berwick Station won't be closed during construction, but may be impacted by rail disruptions at times.

  • Looking at the answer to the question asked by Mysticraja I am now a bit worried that the level crossing removal is going to be a negative thing for us who use the trains. I am all for level crossing removals, don;t get me wrong. However this level crossing at Clyde road is one of the saving graces getting us out of the train station during peak hour. For example, today it took me close to half hr just to get from the train station to the Clyde Road / Monash Freeway intersection, most of that time trying to get out of the car park. When the level crossing boom gates are down, it gives the drivers coming out of the train station car park some relief and space to exit the parking. The Level Crossing Project / Metro / Casey Council / Vic Roads and whoever else is involved needs to look at the bigger picture as your statement "Removing the level crossing will ease congestion and get you where you need to go, safer and sooner" will not hold true otherwise. Thanks

Hi Mal, thanks for your comments. We'd encourage you to provide your feedback about the Clyde Road Level Crossing Removal Project via our online survey available to you on this website.

  • Few questions - is the plan for a tunnel or sky rail? - will the number of traffic signals near the station at Clyde be reduced? - any plan to connect the 2 parking lots either side of the line?

    Mysticraja asked 7 months ago

Hi Mysticraja, a design solution for the Clyde Road level crossing will be determined later this year with works beginning in 2020. We'd encourage you to to provide your feedback on the Clyde Road Level Crossing Removal Project through the online survey available to you on this website.

  • How soon will we see traffic flow improvements during peak hours?

    Tmonine asked 7 months ago

Hi Tmonine, the boom gates are down for more than a third of the morning peak. Removing the level crossing at Clyde Road Berwick will help ease congestion in the area. Construction to remove this level crossing will begin next year.

  • Will there be any improvement made to Clyde road between princess hwy/ reserve st to Monash freeway? A lot of congestion currently is between that stretch and needs work to improve traffic flow as the level crossing is removed.

    Mysticraja asked 7 months ago

Hi Mysticraja, unfortunately this section of Clyde Road is outside of our project area.
