Edithvale Road, Edithvale

On behalf of the Victorian Government, the Level Crossing Removal Project is overseeing the removal of 75 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2025.

The level crossing at Edithvale Road in Edithvale is planned to be removed by lowering the rail line into a trench and building a new road at the current level.

The boom gates at the Edithvale Road level crossing are down for an average of 42 minutes during the 7:00am to 9:00am weekday peak.

The project was subject to an Environment Effects Statement (EES) process, due to its proximity to the Edithvale-Seaford Wetlands.

In September 2018, the Minister for Planning’s Assessment of the EES for Edithvale and Bonbeach found that the rail-under-road option would not threaten the wetlands.

Therefore, the proposal to lower the rail line into a trench at Edithvale and Bonbeach, to remove the Edithvale Road and Bondi Road level crossings, and build two new stations, will proceed.

The EES process was finalised in December 2018, when the Federal Minister for the Environment gave approval on matters relevant to the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999.

While the EES process has been finalised, there is still more work to do before construction can start. This includes further planning and design work and awarding a construction contract.

Work to remove the level crossing at Edithvale is planned to be completed before 2022.
