Train traveling through a level crossing at Grange Road in Alphington with the boom gate down

On behalf of the Victorian Government, the Level Crossing Removal Project is overseeing the removal of 75 dangerous and congested level crossings across Melbourne by 2025.

The Grange Road level crossing was removed in 2018, with the train line lowered under Grange Road.

A construction blitz in 2018 enabled crews to lower the rail line beneath Grange Road, as well as duplicate the rail line between Rosanna and Heidelberg, and build the new Rosanna Station as part of the Hurstbridge Rail Line Upgrade project.

Project overview

The level crossing at Grange Road in Alphington was roughly halfway between Alphington and Fairfield stations on the Hurstbridge line, and a short distance from Heidelberg Road. On a typical weekday about 25,000 vehicles would pass through the level crossing. Many of these would travel through the level crossing during the two-hour morning peak, when the boom gates were down for about 40 minutes.

The project has also created new and improved pedestrian and bicycle paths between Alphington Station and Perry Street, with crossings providing access to Fulham Road and Hamilton Street.

Community Reference Group

We established a Community Reference Group (CRG) to engage local representatives and experts to help drive key aspects of our work and ensure strong community influence on issues such as:

  • minimising disruption during construction
  • look and feel of the local area
  • urban design
  • any wider community feedback or concerns.

Nominations were invited from members of the community who felt they were able to represent their local area during the removal of the Grange Road level crossing. Visit the Grange Road Community Reference Group online hub for more information.
