Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing

The Old Geelong Road level crossing in Hoppers Crossing is used by 18,000 vehicles each day. This is a congested bottleneck as traffic moves between Princes Highway and Princes Freeway.

Removing this crossing will improve safety, provide more reliable travel times and reduce congestion at this key connection point in Hoppers Crossing.

The design

We looked at options to benefit the local community and transport network, as well as a number of technical considerations, through the design and development phases.

A road over rail design connecting Old Geelong Road and Princes Highway allows for:

Minimal disruptions

The level crossing will remain open until the new road bridge is built.

Better transport connections

By moving the road, we will create a new direct link to Princes Highway and reduce commuter traffic through this local shopping area. This design also simplifies the complex intersections at Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Lane and Princes Highway.

Improved safety

With commuter traffic kept to major roads, Hoppers Crossing Station and the nearby shopping precinct will be safer for the community to move around.

New Hoppers Crossing Station overpass

After the level crossing is removed, pedestrians will access Hoppers Crossing Station via a new pedestrian overpass.

The overpass will be covered by a roof, with canopies at ground level on the north and south sides for weather protection.

Pedestrians will access the overpass via stairs or lifts to cross the rail line or access Hoppers Crossing Station.

There will be space for new plazas at each end of the pedestrian overpass. Landscaping plans will continue to develop over the coming months.

We’ve located the new pedestrian overpass further to the west of the existing crossing. This will allow us to build the structure without closing Old Geelong Road to traffic and allows for longer station platforms to be built in the future.

We’re removing the level crossing at Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing, making the area safer and easier to get around.

As part of the design process, the Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP) has undertaken detailed technical investigations.

These include ecological surveys, noise monitoring, flood modelling, geotechnical investigations, cultural and heritage studies, feature surveys and traffic data collection. We’ve also worked to establish the location of underground utilities such as gas or telecommunications cabling.

To help facilitate the project, LXRP will request that the Minister for Planning make a change to the Wyndham Planning

To help facilitate the project, LXRP will request that the Minister for Planning make a change to the Wyndham Planning Scheme. This is known as a Planning Scheme Amendment (PSA).

As part of the PSA process, we are seeking your feedback on a number of areas relating to the Old Geelong Road level crossing removal.

Your feedback will help us understand what’s important to the community and what needs to be considered as we progress with the development of designs.

A summary of all submissions will be provided to the Minister for Planning as part of a formal request to amend the Wyndham Planning Scheme.

Submissions may relate to aspects of the Old Geelong Road level crossing removal, including design considerations, management or mitigation measures for any potential impacts, or any other matter relevant to the construction or operation of the project.

Submissions close Monday 7 October 2019.
